Toda la vida fue albañil y toda la vida se hizo las alpargatas de pita y esparto (después vino la goma para las suelas y desplazó al esparto) que habitualmente calzaba la gente de aquellas tierras.
Muchas más llevaría elaborar de principio a fin las alpargatas pero ya me hago una idea.

I understand Antonio much better listening to his hands than his words. Ozú! (1). What a way of speaking they have by those mountains from Cadiz! “Antonio, let see if you can explain me how you make the espadrilles” (2). And the only thing I get from his large speech is a “zi, zi”(3), which works as a life jacket for this ocean of verbal confusion in where he had me submerged.
He has been a bricklayer during his whole life, and during his whole life he has made his own espadrilles from agave and esparto grass (later came the rubber for soles that displaced the esparto grass), which usually wore people of those lands.
There’s no need to insist, wasting no time he takes a big leaf of agave and starts to scrape the leaf over a plank to extract the fibres. It has been so fast than I hardly had time to catch cameras for recording him. A lot of high technology but nothing to do before some hands working directly on the material. It requires effort, time and hand this of scratching the agave until the flesh gives way to the little threads that ran all along the leaf. Then we must let them dry and they will be ready for the work.
There’s nothing else than branches of agave on the kitchen table. Then Antonio’s hands come into scene, taking a few little fibres, they will go twisting them for making a rob at the same time as they conform the upper part of the espadrille. He explains me (I believe) what it must be done, but I thank his hands that make it. Next comes the heel with its complexity and its explanation, and I keep praising his hands. The sewed for the sole and the master’s smile showing a finished pair put an end to a ‘class’ that took several hours.
It would take many more hours to make the espadrilles from the beginning to the end but already I make myself an idea from it.
When one left children alone (which is practically impossible nowadays) and they have the opportunity of watching skilful hands making something (a basket, a pileup of clay...), they are amazed. Finding out what happens in this meeting between crude material and hands is just fascinating. A little bit that one allow its own child coming to the surface, if they have not yet killed, or has done it oneself, one recognizes this wonder and it is a luck that, in spite of so rampant glitz, still there be an opportunity to attend to that ceremony nowadays.

(3)“yes, yes”: The Spanish “si, si”, but pronounced with an accent from this part of Andalusia, where the ‘s’ sounds like the English ‘th’ of ‘think’.

Yes, agave is very common in spadrilles and others basketry pieces from Andalucia and Balear Islands.

Acabo de conocer tu blog y esta entrada me ha emocionado; te voy a contar por qué.
Soy de Arcos de la Frontera, precioso pueblo de la sierra de Cádiz. Mi familia es conocida allí por la familia de los "hilopitas". Mi bisabuelo, al que no conocí, era uno de los grandes artesanos de la zona en su época. Lo pude ver trabajar en un video del NODO y al ver estas fotos se me viene a la mente esa misma imagen... Me alegra mucho saber que aun hay gente que sigue trabajando el hilo de pita como lo hacía él.

Gracias a ti, Mayte, por tu bonito comentario e historia. Al revivir tu recuerdo y contarnoslo parece que uno lo revive contigo. Poca es la gente que sigue con estas artes y por eso mi empeño en recoger todos los testimonios e informaciones que puedo e ir contando algunos de ellos en este blog.
